Position Summary:
The Safety Manager serves as a strategic advisor, compliance expert, and consultant, guiding and supporting safety managers and specialists within the Operations and Fleet business units. This role promotes best practices, ensures regulatory compliance, and influences a proactive safety culture across Four Seasons Produce, Inc. The Safety Manager leads the Workers' Compensation claims process, providing oversight, guidance, and strategic management to achieve effective claims handling and risk mitigation outcomes. Key to this role is the ability to demonstrate adaptability, resilience, strong communication, and interpersonal skills to successfully manage safety in a 24x7x365 environment that includes a diverse workforce of warehouse workers, drivers, and salaried staff.
Position Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Strategic Safety Leadership and Consultations
- Serve as a trusted advisor to Operations and Fleet teams by providing expert guidance on safety strategy, program development, and policy implementation.
- Partner with leadership to create safety initiatives aligned with business goals and promote a culture of prevention, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Coordinate and lead strategic safety meetings with operational leaders to review metrics, address issues, and drive best practices across departments.
Policy Development and Compliance Oversight
- Develop and maintain comprehensive safety policies and programs, including but not limited to Hazard Communication, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Powered Industrial Vehicles (PIV), and Hearing Conservation.
- Ensure full compliance with OSHA, DOT, and other regulatory standards through audits, inspections, and regular risk assessments.
- Support and advise site-specific safety personnel on regulatory compliance issues and the implementation of consistent safety protocols.
Risk Management and Worker’s Compensation
- Lead the full lifecycle of Workers' Compensation claims, including incident investigation, documentation, return-to-work coordination, litigation management, and partnering with insurance providers.
- Monitor injury and claim data to identify trends, develop preventative strategies, and reduce incident frequency and severity.
- Manage an early intervention program in partnership with an onsite physical therapist to proactively address ergonomic and physical risks.
- Proactively identify potential safety risks through data analysis and observations, and implement organized, effective solutions to address and prevent workplace hazards.
Training, Engagement, and Communication
- Design and support annual and role-specific safety training programs in collaboration with the Training Department.
- Facilitate interactive safety committee meetings and lead employee engagement initiatives that promote safety awareness and ownership at all levels.
- Conduct on-the-floor observations, behavior-based safety audits, and real-time coaching to reinforce safe work practices.
- Report safety performance metrics and data trends to the executive leadership team, highlighting risks, progress, and opportunities.
Industrial Hygiene and Emergency Preparedness
- Conduct industrial hygiene sampling (e.g., noise, air quality) and evaluate results to mitigate environmental hazards.
- Maintain and lead the Emergency Response Plan, including coordination of emergency response teams and protocols for medical and safety incidents.
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Build strong, collaborative relationships with internal departments to align safety practices and foster a shared responsibility for injury prevention.
- Influence leadership and operations partners to prioritize safety behavior, continuous improvement, and compliance through open dialogue and practical support.
Safety Systems Management
- Ownership of the enterprise-wide safety software to accurately capture incidents, corrective actions, and report on safety trends and insights.
Required Skills and Education, Training, or Certification(s):
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and environmental health or related technical field
- Minimum of 5 years experience in occupational safety, regulatory compliance, and advisory roles, with demonstrated impact in diverse operational settings.
- Experience with Pennsylvania Workers Compensation Laws, claim management and litigation processes.
- In depth knowledge of OSHA standards, DOT regulations, ANSI guidelines, and Workers’ Compensation best practices.
- Skilled in identifying, assessing, and mitigating workplace risks through data-driven safety strategies and compliance audits.
- Ability to prioritize and respond to emerging safety risks in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication, coaching, and motivational skills, with the ability to effectively influence and advise operational leaders and stakeholders on safety matters.
- Willingness to provide on-call support 24/7 and regularly support PM shifts as needed.
- Fluency in English, with the ability to speak and write clearly in professional and safety-related contexts.
Ability to work in a warehouse environment with varying conditions (i.e., cool temperatures, concrete floors, powered industrial trucks)
Preferred Experience and Skills:
- Bilingual proficiency (English and Spanish)
- Prior experience in distribution, logistics or fleet management environments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, Teams and Outlook
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), or equivalent certification.
- First aid, AED, and CPR certification
- OSHA 10- or 30-hour certification
